The American West is often romanticized as a land of opportunity and freedom, where anyone could reinvent themselves and build a new life. However, for African Americans, the reality was often far different. In the 19th century, the Colorado Territory was a particularly hostile environment for black settlers, who faced discrimination, violence, and even death. Despite these challenges, some African Americans, like Scott and Harriet Blue, persevered and established lasting legacies in the state.

The Blues' Early Life

Scott Blue was born into slavery in Missouri in 1835. He escaped to freedom in 1856 and made his way to Colorado Territory, where he worked as a miner and a farmer. Harriet Blue was born in Ohio in 1844. She came to Colorado Territory in 1860 to join her husband. The Blues settled in Denver, where they raised a family and became active members of the community.

Facing Persecution

The Blues' life in Colorado was not without its challenges. They faced discrimination from white settlers, who often refused to sell them land or provide them with services. They were also the target of violence, including threats and beatings. In 1865, a group of white men attacked the Blue's home and threatened to kill them if they did not leave town. The Blues refused to be intimidated, and they continued to live in Denver.

Building a Community

Despite the persecution they faced, the Blues were determined to build a life for themselves and their family in Colorado. They established a strong network of friends and supporters, both black and white. They also worked to create institutions that would serve the African American community, including churches, schools, and businesses. The Blues' efforts helped to create a sense of community and belonging for African Americans in Denver.

Establishing a Legacy

Scott Blue died in 1915, and Harriet Blue died in 1927. They left behind a legacy of perseverance and community that continues to inspire African Americans in Colorado today. The Blues' home is now a museum, and it is a popular destination for visitors who want to learn about the history of African Americans in the West. The Blues' story is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, it is possible to achieve great things.

The story of Scott and Harriet Blue is a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by African Americans in the American West. Despite facing persecution and prejudice, the Blues persevered and established a lasting legacy in Colorado. Their story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of community.
