The Le Family
The Le family immigrated to the United States from Vietnam in the 1950s, seeking a better life and the promise of the American dream. However, they soon discover that the reality of life in America is far different from their expectations. They face discrimination and prejudice, and struggle to find their place in a society that often treats them as outsiders.
The patriarch of the Le family, Binh, is a proud and hardworking man who is determined to provide a good life for his family. However, his dreams are shattered when his son, Trung, is drafted into the Vietnam War and sent to fight against his homeland. Binh is torn between his love for his country and his loyalty to his family, and he struggles to reconcile the two.
Trung's sister, Lan, is a bright and ambitious young woman who dreams of becoming a doctor. However, her plans are put on hold when she is forced to take on the role of caretaker for her family after Trung is sent to war. Lan is determined to make the best of her situation, and she eventually finds her calling as a nurse.
The Soskin Family
The Soskin family is a white American family living in the suburbs of New York City. The father, David, is a successful businessman, and the mother, Marilyn, is a stay-at-home mom. Their son, Mark, is a high school student who is struggling to find his identity and his place in the world.
Mark is deeply affected by the Vietnam War, and he begins to question the values of his parents' generation. He becomes involved in the anti-war movement, and he eventually decides to drop out of college and travel to Vietnam to see the war firsthand.
The Interwoven Lives
The lives of the Le and Soskin families become intertwined when Mark meets Lan at a war protest. They are immediately drawn to each other, and they begin a secret relationship. However, their relationship is forbidden by their families, and they must overcome many challenges in order to be together.
As the war continues, the families of both Mark and Lan are forced to confront their own prejudices and assumptions. They learn to see each other as individuals, and they eventually come to accept the love between their children.
