July 7, 1937

Today, the Japanese invaded China. I am so excited! I have never seen anything like this before. The Japanese planes are flying overhead, and the bombs are exploding all around us. I can't believe that this is happening. I am so scared, but I am also so excited. This is going to be a great adventure.

As the war progresses, Ai Li's diary entries become increasingly dark and depressing. She writes about the death and destruction that she sees all around her.

August 15, 1937

I saw a dead body today. It was a little girl, about my age. She had been shot in the head. I don't know who killed her, but I am sure that it was the Japanese. I am so scared. I don't know what is going to happen to me.

Despite the horrors that she witnesses, Ai Li never loses her hope for the future. She writes about her dreams of a better world, and about her belief that China will eventually defeat the Japanese.

December 13, 1937

I believe that China will win the war. I know that it will be a long and difficult fight, but I am confident that we will prevail. We are a strong and resilient people, and we will not be defeated.
