New requirements for methane monitoring and control: The standards now require that mines use methane monitors to continuously monitor methane levels in the mine atmosphere. Mines must also have a plan in place to control methane levels if they exceed certain limits.
New requirements for dust control: The standards now require that mines use dust collectors to control dust levels in the mine atmosphere. Mines must also have a plan in place to monitor dust levels and to take corrective action if dust levels exceed certain limits.
New requirements for electrical safety: The standards now require that mines use ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) on all electrical outlets in the mine. GFCIs help to prevent electrical shocks and fires.

All coal mines in the United States must comply with the MSHA Standards for Coal Mines. Mines that do not comply with the standards may be subject to fines and other penalties.
