Captain James Cook's voyages of exploration were some of the most important in history. He charted new lands, discovered new peoples, and helped to expand the world's knowledge of geography and science. Cook's ships played a vital role in his success, and the Endeavour, Resolution, and Discovery are all remembered as some of the most famous ships in history.
The Endeavour
The Endeavour was a Whitby-built collier that was purchased by the Royal Navy in 1768. She was renamed the Endeavour and was fitted out for Cook's first voyage of exploration. The Endeavour was a sturdy ship, and she was well-suited for long journeys. She was also armed with 10 guns, which made her a formidable opponent in battle.
Cook's first voyage of exploration lasted for three years, and the Endeavour sailed over 30,000 miles. During this voyage, Cook charted the coast of New Zealand and discovered the east coast of Australia. He also made contact with the Maori people of New Zealand and the Aboriginal people of Australia.
The Endeavour was sold out of the Royal Navy in 1775, and she was eventually broken up in 1799. However, her legacy lives on, and she is remembered as one of the most important ships in British history.
The Resolution
The Resolution was a Whitby-built collier that was purchased by the Royal Navy in 1771. She was renamed the Resolution and was fitted out for Cook's second voyage of exploration. The Resolution was a larger ship than the Endeavour, and she was armed with 12 guns.
Cook's second voyage of exploration lasted for three years, and the Resolution sailed over 60,000 miles. During this voyage, Cook explored the Pacific Ocean and discovered the Hawaiian Islands. He also made contact with the people of Tahiti, Tonga, and Samoa.
The Resolution was sold out of the Royal Navy in 1780, and she was eventually broken up in 1782. However, her legacy lives on, and she is remembered as one of the most important ships in British history.
The Discovery
The Discovery was a Whitby-built collier that was purchased by the Royal Navy in 1775. She was renamed the Discovery and was fitted out for Cook's third voyage of exploration. The Discovery was a smaller ship than the Resolution, and she was armed with 10 guns.
Cook's third voyage of exploration lasted for four years, and the Discovery sailed over 50,000 miles. During this voyage, Cook explored the Pacific Ocean and discovered the Cook Islands and the Sandwich Islands. He also made contact with the people of Hawaii, Alaska, and Siberia.
The Discovery was sold out of the Royal Navy in 1780, and she was eventually broken up in 1806. However, her legacy lives on, and she is remembered as one of the most important ships in British history.
