The Santos peace negotiations with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) were a historic event that ended a 52-year civil war. The negotiations were complex and challenging, but ultimately led to a peace agreement that was signed in 2016.

Background

The Colombian civil war began in 1964 when the FARC, a Marxist guerrilla group, launched an armed uprising against the Colombian government. The war was fought primarily in rural areas and resulted in the deaths of over 220,000 people.

In 2010, President Juan Manuel Santos initiated peace talks with the FARC. The talks were mediated by Cuba and Norway and took place in Havana, Cuba.

Negotiations

The negotiations were complex and challenging. The two sides had to agree on a number of issues, including:

  • The FARC's disarmament
  • The FARC's political participation
  • The victims of the war
  • The future of rural Colombia

The negotiations were often close to collapse, but the two sides eventually reached an agreement in 2016.

Peace Agreement

The peace agreement was signed on November 24, 2016. The agreement included the following provisions:

  • The FARC agreed to disarm and demobilize within 180 days.
  • The FARC agreed to form a political party and participate in the Colombian political process.
  • The government agreed to provide reparations to the victims of the war.
  • The government agreed to invest in rural Colombia in order to address the root causes of the conflict.

Implementation

The implementation of the peace agreement has been challenging. The FARC has largely complied with its obligations, but there have been some delays in the disarmament process. The government has also faced challenges in implementing the provisions of the agreement related to reparations and rural development.

The Santos peace negotiations were a historic achievement. The agreement ended a 52-year civil war and has brought about a new era of peace in Colombia. The implementation of the agreement has been challenging, but the Colombian people are committed to building a lasting peace.
