Anne Braden Speaks: Selected Writings and Speeches 1947-1999
Anne Braden Speaks: Selected Writings and Speeches 1947-1999 is a powerful collection of the writings and speeches of Anne Braden, a leading figure in the American civil rights movement. Braden's work is marked by her deep commitment to social justice, her unwavering belief in the power of nonviolent resistance, and her ability to articulate the complex realities of race and class in the United States. This collection offers a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of the civil rights movement, the struggle for racial equality, and the power of one person to make a difference.
A Life of Activism
Anne Braden was born in 1924 in Louisville, Kentucky. She grew up in a segregated society, but she was always aware of the injustice of racial discrimination. In college, she became involved in the civil rights movement, and in 1954 she co-founded the Southern Conference Educational Fund (SCEF),an organization dedicated to promoting racial equality in the South. Braden's work with SCEF brought her into contact with some of the most important figures in the civil rights movement, including Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and Bayard Rustin. She also worked closely with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC),a group of young activists who played a major role in the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

Braden's commitment to nonviolent resistance was tested on many occasions. In 1956, she and her husband were attacked by a mob of white supremacists in Mississippi. In 1961, she was arrested for participating in a sit-in at a segregated restaurant in Louisville. And in 1964, she was subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury investigating the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, a group of black activists who were challenging the all-white delegation from Mississippi at the Democratic National Convention. Braden refused to testify, and she was sentenced to prison for contempt of court.
Despite the threats and violence she faced, Braden never wavered in her commitment to the civil rights movement. She continued to write and speak out against racism, and she worked tirelessly to build a more just and equitable society.
The Power of Words
Anne Braden was a gifted writer and speaker. Her words had a powerful impact on those who heard them, and they continue to inspire people today. In her writings and speeches, Braden argued that racism is a system of oppression that benefits white people at the expense of black people. She called for an end to segregation, discrimination, and violence, and she urged white people to take responsibility for creating a more just society.
Braden's work is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the history of the civil rights movement and the struggle for racial equality in the United States. Her words are a reminder that one person can make a difference, and that the fight for justice is never over.
